Day 7 - The End.

Well, I have to say that I'm breathing a sigh of relief this morning, especially as the nice Abel and Cole man delivered a whopping £75 worth of shopping to my door at 6 this morning.  Over double what I spent last week but I'm not sorry about it at all.
The food I had bought did last until the bitter end and we had a scrumptious toad in the hole with potatoes and carrots and beans and I was going to take a photo but it was gone in a flash so I shall just show you someone else's because I love toad in the hole.

A toad in a hole,lol.
Oops no wrong toad, I like to keep those to eat the pesky slugs.  I wouldn't want you thinking I ate them.  This is what a toad in the hole is meant to look like.

That's better!
The challenge pointed out to me that, while I think I would be able to live off of £1 per person per week, the range of food that I could afford would be so limited that it would soon become depressing.  I am lucky I have that choice.  I can't eat from Marks and Spencer's every day or even once a month come to that, but I can afford £2 - £3 per person a day which gives me the ability to feed myself and my family in a healthy and far more interesting way and for that I am very grateful indeed.

What I missed most while doing the challenge was fruit, and my digestive system is a little worse for wear ( I won't go into any more detail than that) and I have also managed to put on weight (arghhhhh) even though I was eating on such a low budget, I think the lack of fruit and the reliance on carbohydrates has made me blow up like a balloon.  I also really missed the ability to drink anything other than water, although I know this sounds spoilt as there are so many on this planet that would kill for just that.

It has shown me that we were spending far more than was necessary on food and drink so I have come out the other end of this experiment with something usefull from that point of view.

I would like to say thank you to Voie de Vie who also shared her week of extreme frugal eating with us and for all of you who have followed me on my little experiment.  Right now, I'm off to raid the fruit basket.  My family will be thankful and I can stop worrying about this, lol.

i think my previous comment has been lost due to the blogger problems. I wanted to say that I tried the challenge, but overspent - I did the shopping in Morrisons and i already had a fairly full freezer. It has shown me that I can do better in terms of reducing the bill. Also I would not be able to buy meat - we would all be veggie if I had only £21 each week! you have done really well x

OhMyBob - lol at the great pictorals! I can't wait to get my hands on some fruit as well - but I need to actually go and get it. I should have been smart and had something delivered today as a treat, but didn't.

This was a really useful and rewarding experiment, and I am so thrilled to have done it alongside you and your family. I give them a lot of credit and kudos!

I'm so impressed that you did this! Even though I wimped out of taking the challenge myself, it did make me think hard about the price of different foods. I knew meat was expensive - I went to the butcher's at the beginning of the week and spent £21 for two of us - that's blown the budget out of the water just on meat, but I didn't realise how hard it is to eat healthy food on such a tight budget.

Thanks for the education :-)

Well done you for completing your week, despite my enthusiasm, as several rather major things have been happening I just couldn't commit to participating, I agree, I think the lack of fruit would finish me off too! x
